About the Project:  5 years ago my youngest son Nick wanted to build a volcano, not just a volcano a big one.  So we built a 3ft volcano.  Then he wanted to add on to it, so we built a 3ft crocodile waterfall, it took 9 months to build, and 2 to 4 hours every night.  Then Halloween came up, and we decided to build a bat cave, which took 2 months to build.  It stands 6ft tall, and I had to climb inside of it to plaster it.  So we got to talking about a program to show off our project to schools all over the world.  We call this the out reach program.  It's made for kids to show them that by using your brain and a little imagination that you can build anything.  We tried to get someone to air our video on TV, but it wasn't good enough, Nick was crushed.  In June of 2005 I tore the hole island apart and made it 9ft by 12ft, everything is on wheels, and I added more volcanoes, made it an island of make believe.  We send out tapes to who ever wants to see it (free) up until Christmas, that's when all the science fairs are done.  Now we are getting ready for next year.  I would say since my overtime at the Mazda plant in Flat Rock Michigan is going away, that I need someone to sponsor our project.  In the 5 years that we have been doing this we must have sent out 500 tapes.  Our tape wasn't the best, but funding we can get help from the professionals.  I've never asked for a hand out before, but I do believe our project showed the kids that there is more to life than playing those video games (parents know what I'm talking about).  how do you make a volcano . take a coffee can and on 1/4 board draw around it and then use a pop can .draw around it .thats the bottom and the top .cut them out . take a bottle cap and draw around it on the top peice thats your hole for the top of the volcano .use 1/4 wood dowels 8 sticks measuring 12 inches .drill 1 size bigger 8 holes in the top and bottom but make sure the holes line up . then put the sticks in there and use a hot glue gun to glue them in .might want to have your mom or dad help you with this . if its crooked thats even better , next glue some plaster mesh on this leave some mesh 2to3 inches over the top to create a look likes its erupted over the years .[see below ] and then your dad will have to help you with the plastering .make sure you wear gloves .plaster from the bottom up .i  use a 16oz. cup for this 1 cup water 1 cup plaster .it should take 3 cups to do this size volcano .use a 1/2 inch putty knife . plaster will dry pretty fast so went it starts to get hard .don't worry about make another batch .you will have to cut the mesh at the top  with slits .use your better judgement on how you want your top to look .i will put a couple on the next page .take some primer and paint it when your done .kids a secret about volcano island when your paint has dreid for 2 days to give it that shinny look put 5 coats of polyurthane on it . makes it look like glass .see how shinny mind are .use a 1/2 inch brush buy at walmart . make sure there the 50 cent ones [black hairs ] after you use it the 1st time throw it away .make sure you got some good ventalation this stuff really stinks .when your all done be creative add something to your island like i did . i wanted to make these like the volcano in alaska . little pine trees .very hard to cut out . a volcano this size will take 1 week to do . GOT 8 VIDEO'S NOW ON YOUTUBE , AND RIGHT NOW WERE MAKING A 4FT. UFO , SO I HOPE I HELPED YOU KIDS WITH YOUR SCIENCE PROJECT . BE COOL AND LOVE YOUR MOM AND DAD .
